Free BBB Shredding Event: April 20, 2013
You can't open a newspaper or a browser without reading about some data spill that has put consumers' personal information at risk. Nevada is ranked 5th for number of identity theft occurrences with 3,032 complaints filed last year, according to the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network.
“We came back from a trip to China, and noticed that while we were gone, our credit cards were being charged like 10 times a day by some scammer,” said Las Vegas Consumer Silard Somorjay. “It totaled about $10,000, and we have no idea how someone got our credit card information.”
BBB serving Southern Nevada invites the community to BBB’s Secure Your ID Day to dispose of sensitive documents and electronic waste properly.
When: Saturday, April 20, 2013, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Where: Better Business Bureau: 6040 S. Jones Blvd (north of 215 on east side of street)
What: Document shredding & e-waste recycling
● Bring CDs, disks, hard drives, fax machines, computers, laptops, printers, CPUs, copiers, etc. (memory drives will be punctured and wiped with a magnet)
● Bring binders, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, wood & metal to be recycled
● Old cell phones will be wiped and refurbished through 911 Cell Phone Bank to be used for emergency services
● First 10 boxes are free. $10 per additional box
Consumers who cannot make the event are encouraged to drop their items off between April 15-19 in a secure bin at BBB offices between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Documents will be shredded daily. Any donations will go to help UNLV Dental School’s class of 2015 who will be volunteering at the event.
Each consumer will receive a free credit card protective sleeve to protect from skimming devices.
